The Story Behind The Song
Here’s the story of how the Shine On! Song was born….
I met Fiz Anthony at one of Craig Duswalt’s Rockstar Bootcamps—and I immediately felt a connection (I’d learn later that he’d felt the same way). We had wanted to get together to discuss things further right then and there, but something always seemed to be getting in the way. Finally, in the last hour of the Bootcamp, we came together and—without any words—we could feel a connection.
He looked at me and said, matter-of-factly, “I’m supposed to work with you.” I replied, “I don’t even know what you do, however, I’m supposed to work with you. How can we help each other?” Naturally, we made plans to meet, and figure things out.
Prior to meeting with Fiz, we had a phone interview where I learned about his musical prowess, among many more of his talents. He asked me about what the Shine On! Movement was all about. I felt totally comfortable and I explained exactly what the Movement and action steps were. I told him about the Song inside me, that was just waiting to be born.
Although I didn’t realize it then, I was creating the 7 Element and their action steps. It was really organic how it all came together. Nothing felt forced or rushed, or out of place. Everything seemed to be headed towards something definite, and that gave me even greater confidence that we were exactly where we were supposed to be.
Fiz asked me what style of music I preferred. I wanted it very poppy and catchy, like some of Lady Gaga’s or Katy Perry’s songs. Then he asked me to sing and send him my vocals, such as how I sang in the mornings, or in the shower—loud and clear—so that he could hear me. I obliged, and sent him a recording. Right after he heard it he said, “You can sing!”
It was hard for me to believe him because I felt very self-conscious. I decided to continue to trust his judgement though. I would soon figure out he was right: I could sing! I learned a valuable lesson that sometimes others can help us to uncover hidden talents inside ourselves that would otherwise lay dormant. The flip-side of that, unfortunately, can be true as well: some people are determined on keeping our talents buried.
The day before I left to meet up with Fiz in Vegas, I was so excited. I shared my plans with someone else, a me that I wasn’t a good enough singer to pull it off, and and that the Song was going to sound terrible.
I remember thinking, “Maybe they’re right, maybe not. Either way, I’m going. I’m doing this. I’m not going to listen to negative people, let alone allow them to derail my hopes & dictate my dreams.”
I kept thinking, I am so excited! I’m going to do it! I’m going to do it!
Everything Came Together
I went to Las Vegas for 3 days to his professional, comfortable, and amazing studio. He showed me the lyrics that he had written, from all of the notes he’d taken during our conversations. We ended up needing only another 90 minutes to refine it.
He sang the song first, and recorded it. Then I put on the headphones on and, with his voice guiding me, he actually taught me how to sing my song!
I could feel everything just “click” into place. He was completely blown away, and I could hardly believe it myself! He told me that it usually takes a minimum of a half-day for someone to learn how to sing a song, and it had only taken me an hour and a half. We went right into recording, and the rest is history.
My Gratitude Is Overflowing
When I was there, he brought a greatness out of me that I didn’t even know I had. It was such a treasure to work with this amazing individual. He’s that rare person with both great vision, and also the great patience required to see it through.
I have spent most of my life being a Coach and Consultant focused on bringing good things out of people. I’ve always loved watching the light bulb come on, seeing the twinkle in people’s eyes, and igniting the spark that allows them to Shine On!
That’s what Fiz Anthony did for me. Amazingly, it had to do with music. I’m not musically inclined in the least. It was astonishing! He kept encouraging me and saying how proud he was of me. It allowed me to be proud of myself.
Fiz Anthony and I only worked together for a few months. In that time, however, we made both a fantastic work of art, and a lifelong friendship.
It was truly an awesome experience, and I am so honored to be able to share it with you. Thank you for being part of the creation, and continued growth, of the Shine On! Movement.
Thank you so much to Fiz Anthony for being such an amazing, talented, and inspiring person.
